Overview

This documentation is a walkthrough on setting up Remote Desktop Connection to your university computer.

Before being able to initiate a remote connection to your computer, you must know the current IP address or hostname of the destination computer.

Additionally, if using an off-campus network connection, you must also be connected to TTU's VPN service before you will be allowed to connect. Instructions on how to connect to the VPN can be found here: Off-Campus VPN Installation

  1. To use Remote Desktop Connection on Mac you will need to access the Mac App Store.

  2. Download the Remote Desktop Connection App by Microsoft

  3. Once downloaded and installed, open the Remote Desktop Connection App.

  4. You will need to click on the '+' symbol to add a new connection to the list

  5. Here you will be able to set the parameters for the new remote desktop connection, including the remote computer's IP address or hostname (if using the hostname of the computer, you MUST use the full name of the computer including the 'hostname'.tntech.edu) and the username and password used to authenticate to the remote computer.

  6. After setting up your connection, exit the window and the connection to your office computer will be listed.

  7. Double click your new connection to initiate a remote connection to your office computer. When it asks if you want to connect, click Continue.  Once done, a window will open allowing control of your remote computer.

  1. To begin the Remote Desktop Connection setup, search your computer for "Allow remote access to your computer"

  2. Next, in the settings, you will want to make sure that you have selected to allow connections to this computer.

  3. After that, you will need to  search and open the Remote Desktop Connection application

  4. Next, you will select show options and then enter either your computer hostname (if using the hostname, you MUST use the full name of the computer including the .tntech.edu suffix, example: hostname.tntech.edu) or IP address, so your computer from home knows where to connect.

  5. After filling out the information, select 'Connect'.  If successful, a window will open up allowing control of your remote computer.
