Overview

Tennessee Tech will be moving all accounts to a single domain to better facilitate interaction between faculty, staff, and students. Having everyone on the same domain (@tntech.edu) allows for easier collaboration and sharing of data.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Please check below for answers to questions you might have about the process.

How do I get to my new email account?

As always, you'll want to access Tech services through TechExpress. This would include your email.

For an introduction to TechExpress and what it offers, check this video:

What to do if you get one of these errors...

I got the "Something Went Wrong" error. What do I do?

Once the migration is complete, it may be the case that you attempt to login to your email and see this error:

Not to worry. Your account didn't disappear. What's happening here is that your browser is trying to be helpful—too helpful in this case—by remembering your @students account. To get to your new @tntech account, you'll want to try the following:

  1. A "hard refresh" on your browser.
    1. PC: hit Ctrl+Shift+R and try to log in again
    2. Mac: hit Cmd+Shift+R and try to log in again
  2. If that didn't work, clear the cache on your browser. Instructions for doing so in the most popular browsers:
    1. Chrome
    2. Firefox
    3. Safari (Mac OS X)
    4. Safari (iOS)
    5. Edge
I'm getting an error that my account is blocked and should contact an admin. What do I do?

If you use Outlook (desktop or mobile versions), the change from the @students domain to the @tntech domain will cause Outlook to stop sending and receiving emails. This is because your email address has functionally changed, as far as Outlook knows.

In order to use Outlook with your new account, you'll have to remove the @students account and then add the @tntech account. Depending on the size of your mailbox, the following sync might take a while.

Why is my email address changing?

Tennessee Tech will be moving all accounts to a single domain to better facilitate interaction between faculty, staff, and students. Having everyone on the same domain (@tntech.edu) allows for easier collaboration and sharing of data.

For years, Tennessee Tech has been operating in a two-tenant (or two domain) email system. The terminology may be unfamiliar, but you recognize what it means. One 'tenant' is the email domain you associate with the faculty and staff of the University; that is, email addresses ending in "@tntech.edu". The other tenant is the email domain associated with students of the University; email addresses ending in "@students.tntech.edu".

What will my new email address be?

Your username (fmlast42) will not change, only the domain. If your current email address is fmlast42@students.tntech.edu, your new email address will be fmlast42@tntech.edu.

What will happen to my account in the '@students.tntech.edu' domain?

Your mail and OneDrive files will be moved to your new account in the '@tntech.edu' domain.

What will happen to email sent to my '@students.tntech.edu' account after my mailbox has been moved?

Messages sent to your '@students.tntech.edu' account will be delivered to your '@tntech.edu' account. If you have your '@students.tntech.edu' account tied to any services outside the University, you should update these to reflect your '@tntech.edu' account once the migration of data is complete.

I currently forward my student email to another account, such as Gmail. What will happen to that forwarding?

As part of the migration process, any such forwarding rules will be removed. Per Tennessee Tech policy 803 (Email Use), accounts may not be forwarded outside of Tennessee Tech-controlled domains.

I have data in Microsoft Teams. What will happen to that data?

Teams data will not be migrated. You will have until the end of the 2020 calendar year to download any data from Teams in the '@students.tntech.edu' domain.

In order to move data from one Teams account to another, you will need two Incognito/InPrivate browsers open, one to the '@tntech.edu' account and the other to the '@students.tntech.edu' account. Documentation.

What will happen if I try to access my '@students.tntech.edu' mailbox after it has been migrated?

You will see an error message stating: "Something went wrong. A mailbox couldn't be found for fmlast42@students.tntech.edu."

This should be a clear indicator that your mailbox is now in the '@tntech.edu' domain.

I use the Outlook app or another client to access my email. How will this migration impact me?

Once the migration is complete, you should remove the '@students.tntech.edu' account from your email application of choice and then configure it to use your '@tntech.edu' account.

How will I be notified when my account will be moved?

You will receive an email 24 hours before your account is scheduled to be migrated. Migrations will occur overnight to minimize impact to you.

How long will the migration take?

The migration will be started after 10pm and is expected to complete before 8am the following morning.

Will I be able to use my email while the migration is happening?

There will be a period of 10-15 minutes during the migration when your email will be inaccessible.

 What is multi-factor authentication (MFA)?

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is an extra layer of security between you and your account during the authentication process. It protects your account, even if the password is compromised. MFA is a combination of something you know, something you have, and something you are.
